Nancy Louise Shimer (pronounced: [SHY-mer], May 11, 1943 – October 24, 2018) was the maternal grandmother and legal guardian of Daniel Larson, adoptive mother of Elisabeth Shimer, and ex-mother-in-law of Travis Larson.

Nancy was one of the most important figures in Daniel's life. She relocated from California to Colorado in order to support Daniel during his stay at the Tennyson Center, and took guardianship of him to prevent him from being moved into a foster home after being removed from his mother's care by social services. Despite her kind treatment of Daniel, she was known to have enabled his bad habits. It has been alleged that Daniel was said to have physically abused Nancy when he did not get his way.

Nancy passed away from cancer on October 24, 2018, at the age of 75 years. Even after being informed of her death, Daniel did not even bother to see his grandmother on her death bed. It is believed that Daniel either did not attend her funeral or was not invited.

After her death, Daniel would repeatedly mock Nancy's memory by stating that his grandmother put a curse on her, saying that his autism caused her to die, and being everything Nancy did not want him to be.

Biography

Personal life

Nancy Louise Shimer was born on May 11, 1943.

According to Daniel, Nancy worked in social services, with her job requiring her to relocate infants put up for adoption to foster homes. During one of these relocations, Nancy stumbled upon Elisabeth while she was still an infant, to which she then adopted. It is unknown what relationship Elisabeth had with Nancy's biological children, much less what Nancy's relationship with her husband was, especially given their eventual divorce. However, it can be assumed that it was less than positive. Following her adoption of Elisabeth, she moved to from Michigan to California, where she took care of Elisabeth and her other children.

When Daniel, her grandson, was approximately 11 years old, he was removed from his mother’s care due to him suffering from alleged abuse and neglect. After Daniel was taken from her daughter’s care, a custody battle involving Elisabeth, Travis, and Nancy began. Information on this is sparse, but according to Daniel, Nancy’s main argument for him to not be in his father’s care was because he “didn’t even know his father.” One of the other reasons stated for Nancy wanting custody of Daniel was due to fear of him ending up in a foster home, which he had been in many beforehand. Regardless of the validity of the former statement, this raises many questions about what Daniel and his father's relationship was like before his parents broke things off. It is possible that Nancy was a case manager for Daniel, or at least took on that role during Daniel's stay within his foster homes and under her guardianship.

In the end, Nancy gained custody of Daniel, and eventually became Daniel's legal guardian. Afterward, Nancy would take him out of the Tennyson Center's housing program, and would be moved to just schooling. In December 2012, local Colorado news channel KWGN reported on the Tennyson Center, featuring a 14-year-old Daniel and his grandmother. Nancy speaks on how Daniel was a very angry child before she gained custody of him, and was now on the path to improvement. Daniel continued to live with Nancy until her death in 2018.

Death

On October 24, 2018, Nancy passed away at the age of 75 due to complications from mantal cell lymphoma, a rare, aggressive form of cancer that impacts the lymphatic system. While Nancy was passing away, Daniel was invited to the hospice center, where Nancy stayed in her last moments. Instead of seeing her, Daniel chose to attend a Special Olympics game he was participating in to show that he was a “fighter." It is unknown if this was due to him simply not wanting to go, or because he was not invited. In YouTube comments made by his mother, she mentions how Daniel had allegedly beaten his grandmother, even when she was on her deathbed. If true, this may have been a contributing factor if he was not invited to her funeral.

It is unknown where Nancy's funeral service was held, and it is widely believed that she was cremated.

Relationships

Daniel

Prior to 2010, Daniel had been living with his mother, Elisabeth. It is speculated that he was neglected while in her care. It is unclear if this is true, but many speculate that her becoming wheelchair-bound may have caused her to not be able to care for Daniel anymore. Nancy would adopt Daniel sometime between 2010-2012 while Daniel was in the Tennyson Center to prevent Daniel from being put into a foster care system.

It is called into question as to how good her parenting of Daniel truly was. Both of Daniel's parents claim that Nancy enabled his bad behavior, and when he was refused what he wanted, he became violent and started to assault her. All in all, Nancy died with her grandson truly not caring for all the good things she gave him.

Bob Proctor

It was widely speculated that Nancy Shimer and Bob Proctor were in a long-term relationship before Bob met Daniel through the Tennyson Center Reading Buddies program. However, Daniel stated that Bob and Nancy were both in a friendship around the time Bob had met Daniel. Nancy gave Bob access to a trust fund of Daniel after she passed.
