Daniel's obsession with Grace began during his hyper-fixation with fame and his desire to date a celebrity, namely during the time when he would watch America's Got Talent with his grandmother, [[Nancy Shimer]], during his childhood. Ever since then, Daniel has been attracted to her, despite at the time of his infatuation being [[Pedophilia|underage]]. Daniel is [[Pedophilia|physically attracted]] to Grace and ever since his infatuation with her started, he has decided, without her knowledge or consent, that they are dating. This 'relationship' would progress quickly due to Daniel's delusions (mostly fed by fake managers and trolls), leading to his posts on his [[Social Media Accounts|numerous social media accounts]] regarding her becoming far more explicit in nature, including but not limited to Daniel divulging sexual fantasies about Grace and the various unspeakable acts he'd commit towards her if he were to come into contact with her, to hysterically crying about her supposed "death".<ref>https://www.reddit.com/r/Daniellarson/comments/14b6rbl/the_moment_daniel_found_out_about_grace_passing/</ref>  

Grace has never publicly acknowledged Daniel, but according to messages from her mother, Tina VanderWaal, she wants nothing to do with him, which is highly believable. Grace (and to a lesser extent, her family) is often impersonated by trolls, who use her identity to gain Daniel's trust. Daniel is easily fooled by this due to either his sickening lust for her or his obvious mental issues, maybe even both. On multiple occasions, Daniel has made a fool of himself by talking to these trolls about various disturbing subjects, and sometimes even sending revealing, and even potentially illegal, material to them. Even when acknowledging that there are multiple people pretending to be Grace to gain his trust, he never manages to completely acknowledge that these people are actually trolls, lest he have to accept that Grace and her family are absolutely horrified by Daniel and want nothing to do with him.   

Despite the fact he likely has internalized the real VanderWaal's are extremely scared of him and hold nothing but hatred for him, Daniel still reposts photos of Grace on Instagram and is still known to comment on her various platforms.   

Beginning on May 12th, 2021, Daniel claimed, though obviously untrue, that he and Grace had some sort of collaboration in the works that would be coming out soon. Eventually, he made a TikTok announcing that he was dating her. Things escalated quickly from there. Daniel, on several occasions, recorded himself telling random strangers on the streets that he was dating her. Regardless of malicious [[Manipulators|trolls]] tricking and persuading him into thinking that he was dating Grace, and ultimately engendering his delusions of being with her, Daniel went above and beyond to show his unbridled obsession with her.

Daniel, well aware that Grace was only 17 at the start of his obsession, made various posts claiming that he would "wait until Grace is 18". Daniel has claimed to be in either a romantic or sexual relationship with Grace depending on his feelings (or delusions) at the time. If romantic, he claimed that Grace was his girlfriend. If sexual, he explains the various explicit sexual acts he'd do to her. Even so, no matter what he is feeling, It is extremely disturbing no matter what.   

Daniel still tries to claim that he does not like Grace for sexual reasons, but because he "wants to have a chance" with her.<ref>https://www.reddit.com/r/Daniellarson/comments/123yv4y/daniel_denies_pedophilia/</ref> This is very obviously untrue, and furthermore, everything Daniel says about Grace should be taken with a huge grain of salt as he has a penchant for lying and internalizing his delusions.       

As of 2023, Daniel shows no signs of stopping his borderline obsession with her, constantly falling for trolls claims about Grace, and people who pretend to be Grace to get him to do egregious and quite frankly disturbing things. Even though as of recent his Grace-posting has seemed to dwindle, it has never truly died down or went away, Daniels current headcanon being that him and Grace are periodically breaking up and getting back together.   

During one particular delusion, Daniel, seemingly because he is without access to his phone, posts on Likee, a short video creating site that he stayed on during a period of time when he was banned from TikTok, in absolute despair for his followers to get him information. Based on the content of this videos, he is under the impression that there has been some kind of accident and that the VanderWaal family, whom he believes were in contact with him up until this point, is refusing to give him information regarding something he claims to have happened to Grace. Throughout the video, Daniel hits himself and threatens to end his own life. If you know anything about Daniel, he obviously did not follow through with his threats. Additionally, Daniel says that if he doesn't get into contact with the VanderWaal family immediantly, he would allegedly be homeless and on the streets.<ref>https://archive.org/details/the-likee-meltdown</ref> This was a sign, although small, of things to come.  

In these Tiktoks, Daniel claimed that he had "officially fucked up" with Grace to the point she had broken up with him, sounding remarkably sober and in a rare moment of clarity, even saying that Grace was her own person and that she could date whoever she wanted to, and it was her choice if she wanted to date Daniel or not. Daniels reason for going to New York was to win back Graces love from whoever the fake Grace said she wa apparently having sex with, and trying to guilt trip her in these videos by saying that he had as "Heart disease from heartbreak" and in unneccesary, but presumably fake detail about how hard his childhood was.  

As the video goes on, Daniel stays up through the entire night, to the point where you can see the sun rising in the video, determined to get to Grace no matter what or how much it takes. He continues to make wild claims and blatent lies during this walk, along with some karaoke here and there. However, this walk ultimately ended with Daniel, not even 48 hours later, turning back to Denver as he either he got tired from walking, or possibly learning that the Grace who he had been speaking to the whole time was a troll.  

During 2020, Daniel texted a number who claimed to be Grace Vanderwaal, the person behind this number has yet to be identified. In the texts this fake Grace sent, they claimed that they were currently at the White House, and was being raped by her father, Dave VanderWaal, along with being gangbanged and impregnated by a multitude of people. Daniel, completely eating up all of this, goes along with it to purely fuel all of his delusions. Daniel, trying to understand it all, attempts to convince Grace to move out to Denver, where he was staying at the time, to press charges on her father for doing this to her and to presumably live with Daniel. What is important to note is that messages start off with Daniel being extremely sincere for Grace and asking what he can do to help, as he was worried for her safety, before Daniel proceeded to ask this fake Grace what it felt like to be raped, what ran through her mind, so Daniel, in all of his depravity, could picture what it looked like. His excuse for this behaviour was so they could alledagly use this information in court, however Daniel is a horrible liar.  

Grace, of course, tells them that they have never been in contact with Daniel and never plan to be in contact with Daniel, emphatically stating her hatred for him and desire for him to keep her name out his disgusting, scabies-infected mouth. None of which is surprising, considering the very disturbing things he's done in the pursuit of her, and the behaviour of the people who follow his antics. No matter how you feel about Daniel, spam commenting Grace and her family members about Daniel is unacceptable behaviour. Grace and her family have done virtually nothing to deserve it and are purely victims of circumstance. So-called "trolls" message her mother and say Daniel and Grace are dating, taunting her with photoshopped images of Grace and Daniel nearly on the daily. This behaviour is disgusting whether you hate Daniel or love Daniel and there is no denying it or getting around it. Grace shares this sentiment wholeheartadly.
