The Likee Meltdown, also known as Rest in Peace Dave and Grace VanderWaal, was one of the earliest and longest incidents in the Daniel Larson story, occurring on June 25, 2021, and ending on the 26th. The meltdown surrounds Daniel using the video-sharing platform Likee in an effort to reach out to his current management and the "VanderWaal Team," before eventually spiraling into a mental breakdown.
Unlike subsequent meltdowns, this one was not in a single video. Instead, it is a series of clips posted on Likee, a video-posting platform Daniel used due to not having access to his phone, along with a YouTube video titled Rest in peace dave and grace vanderwaal.
This was due to him being convinced by trolls that Grace VanderWaal, his longtime crush, had passed away, and the VanderWaal family was withholding information about his event. However, things took a sharp turn as Daniel began frantically demanding to be "let back on the team", threatening his own life and hitting his head, and fearing he would become homeless. Daniel soon starts blaming an unidentified individual known only as “JP”, and a caretaker,[1] for "all of this". The day after this, he uploaded a video saying that the police were on their way. The unknown individual known as "JP" was revealed to be Daniel's caretaker at the time on August 3, 2025. [2]
Adding to the weirdness, it is unclear what happened before or after the incident concluded. In addition to the confusion, JP's response video to the Likee Meltdown (at least according to comments on reddit) was subsequently lost.[3] This incident also shocked a lot of fans, as it marked the first time he had a meltdown online and hit himself. It also highlighted the impact that trolls and delusions were beginning to have on his mental state.
Background
Prior to the incident, Daniel somehow broke his phone after "tossing it into the air" and was using his laptop to give video updates instead. He reached out to the “VanderWaal family” (actually trolls posing as his management), asking for prayers and claiming they were in critical condition. He urged the so-called VanderWaal Team to spread the word as widely as possible. Daniel alleged that his access to Google and YouTube had been revoked despite prior “agreements,” leaving him without a reliable way to contact his team. As a result, he turned to Likee as an alternative platform, though he was briefly able to post on YouTube as well. He recorded video updates the day before but was unable to upload them until the following day. During these updates, Daniel expressed frantic pleas for Josh and Jay to contact an individual named JP immediately due to an unspecified emergency. He switched to YouTube, where Daniel admitted to sending Grace VanderWaal explicit messages, expressed remorse for the distress he believed he had caused her, and claimed to be carrying on her “legacy” following her supposed death.
However, the next day, Daniel got visibly distressed and had his first online meltdown. He switched back to Likee. Throughout the meltdown, he expressed feelings of isolation and desperation, claiming that JP had threatened to kill him, forcing him to take these actions. He demanded to be reinstated on the VanderWaal team, insisting it was his only means of support and communication. Daniel made urgent pleas to specific team members—Josh, Jay, and the VanderWaal family—to respond immediately and engage with his Likee videos as proof they were receiving his messages. He repeatedly threatened self-harm and suicide if his demands were not met, at times hyperventilating, sobbing, and hitting himself. Daniel emphasized that he would only start taking down his videos once he received confirmation that he was back on the team. He also reported that police were being called into the situation due to the lack of responses and escalating threats.
The next day, Daniel stated that the police were "on their way" and that he would give updates. [4]

They need proof for the investigation. Daniel: The police are about to be called into the situation. We still are getting zero responses. [The lighting in the room has changed, Daniel switches to YouTube. Lead up to the meltdown] Daniel: Grace is going to want this video- thing that I've done. I admit to sexting minors, and... sexting Grace, and sending Grace a dick pic. I'm sorry for putting Grace through so much stress... that she takes her own life and has a heart attack. [Sigh] Her words to me was- her last words to me was: "Daniel, I look up to you. But you make wrong choices. I know you could do pletter- better. I know you could do better. Please do better for me. I want you to carry off your legacy for me- My legacy for me. I don't know if I'm going to make it through the night." And my response to her was yes. I would carry on her legacy. And that's what I'm currently doing. Grace, rest in peace. I don't know if you're getting this message. But if you got this message, you have any- you can always be welcome to come to my house. I don't know if- in heaven you can see everything. I don't know, but you're always welcome to be here. And I'm sorry for everything that has happened. Maybe one day, when I die, we can finally meet and I can apologize. But right now, I'm worried about clearing this up and fixing what I've done. That's why I'm making a YouTube video right now. But I will tell you, I'm not going to sit here and do thousands of YouTube videos like I've been doing right now, I'm just doing this one video to try to clear things up. I'm just trying to get the word out. I'm sorry, Grace. You should have never dealt with this. You should have never gone through this. You should have never had a heart attack. I'm so sorry.
